The very popular Tonibell livery on the Bedford CA in pink. Tonibell was started in 1937 by Italian-born Toni Pignatelli and his Scottish wife. Known as Tonis, it consisted of a small ice-cream manufacturing plant in a shop in the High Street of Middlesex. Their first mobile vehicle was purchased in 1951 - a tricycle fitted with a holdover box to carry ice-cream. A year later a small van was converted into a mobile ice-cream vehicle complete with chimes.
Business expanded and the name was changed to Tonibell and over the years the company changed hands many times and at its peak there were over 500 vans and 15 parlours. In the early 1960s the most popular light commercial vehicle was the CA. The Bedford CA had a 90 inch wheelbase , quite small by todays standards , so they launched a 102inch version which was designated the CAL. Hence the CA became known as the CAS.
